Three hijackers filmed their high-speed escape on the stolen vehicle’s dashcam without even knowing it on Tuesday last week.
From the footage it can be seen how the suspects skip a series of traffic lights and stop signs.
Even a collision with another car could not stop the three men from speeding on in the high-powered Jeep.
Gerald Groenewald from Sec Pros told Express the Sec Pros anti-hijacking team was mobilised shortly before 9pm, following a report of Jeep that was hijacked on Commissioner Street.
The suspects pulled the victim from his car in the driveway and sped off.
Groenewald said metro police officer Morné Minnie spotted the suspects speeding through red traffic lights on Monument Road and gave chase.
“At one stage, the Jeep travelled down Monument Road at 172km/h. While nearing a Total garage, the Jeep went over a traffic circle at high speed on the corner of Rietfontein and Monument roads.”

He said the hijackers later collided with a community police forum patroller’s white Caddy on Monument Road. The patroller’s vehicle was knocked off the road.
“Urgent backup was called while the hijackers managed to escape with the Jeep.”
Minnie, still in pursuit at the time of the accident, stopped to check on the patroller and lost the hijackers.
Groenewald said: “Sec Pros’ live monitoring centre picked up the Jeep’s signal again, still speeding down Monument Road towards Glen Marais. Minnie, along with three other Sec Pros reaction officers, were given the coordinates and followed the Jeep yet again.”
This time they came from different directions to close in on the suspects.
The team rushed to Tembisa and launched a search on Brian Mazibuko Drive where they picked up the signal.
The vehicle was recovered on the corner of Nkanyamba and Nyoni roads in Tembisa at around 9.30pm. However, the suspects managed to escape.
