Another armed robbery at Kempton Park Golf Club

The man only took a cellphone and two branded caps

A father and son were robbed at gunpoint at Kempton Park Golf Club on Saturday afternoon.

“What was meant to be a relaxing day turned into a nightmare,” Nico Oosthuizen said about the robbery around 1.30pm at the 13th hole.

After instructing him and his son Charl at gunpoint to lay down and not look up, the man ordered them to hand over their branded golf caps and a cellphone.

“We realised this was not his first robbery and the precision with which he was conducting the crime, confirmed he was a ‘cut above the rest’.

“When I looked up after a few seconds, I saw a white vehicle speeding away from the entrance to the tee,” Nico said.

The golfer said a group of 10 to 12 women had just finished playing. “Imagine the danger they would have been exposed to,” he expressed.

“We immediately returned to the clubhouse to report the incident. The club captain told us there was nothing he could do about it when we advised him that we would not play at the club again.

“This is not the first robbery at Kempton Park Golf Club. My concern is that somebody will be killed due to the lack of security. Must somebody die before Kempton Park Golf Club management does something about the arrogant robbers?”

Head of marketing and member of Kempton Park Golf Club’s executive committee Anton Potgieter expressed his shock at the incident.

“We have done everything in our power to correct the security weak spots by mending broken fences where needed, in addition to hiring security services that patrol the area 24/7.

“We are truly surprised about the incident and we’ll discuss a way forward to address the security issue again,” Potgieter said on Monday.

He said the committee and general management would meet on Thursday to discuss better arrangements to combat security risks.

The robbery was reported to Kempton Park SAPS.

In October last year, Express reported about another robbery at the same club. During this incident five golfers were also accosted by one armed man on the 16th hole.

The men were also ordered to lay on the ground as the suspect took their cellphones, watches and other personal belongings.
