A woman claiming to be from Brits was arrested on suspicion of being part of a group of women drugging men at taverns before taking their belongings.
The 26-year-old was arrested on Monday by the Ivory Park police officers after she was identified by one of the men who allegedly fell victim to the group. It is alleged that the woman, together with others known to her, would hang out at taverns around the Ebony Park area, waiting to be picked up by some of the male patrons.
Capt Bernard Matimulane, Ivory Park Police Station communications officer, said they then accompany these men to their places where they are mostly drugged and they steal anything from their victims’ rooms before leaving.
“In most of the cases the victims become aware of the theft several hours later, and by then the suspects had vanished. The Ivory Park policing precinct has experienced several crimes with this modus operandi in the past year,” said Matimulane.
The station commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, Brig David Mbongeni Ngcobo, has welcomed this arrest, but emphasised the fact that people should not be going to taverns and such places with the purposes of hooking up with strangers and bringing those into their spaces.
“Our experience as the Ivory Park SAPS has shown that this is not a safe practice as these encounters have ended in disasters for those men, many of whom would have been under the influence of liquor during the adventures,” said Ngcobo.
