Three in court for locking Winnie Mandela man in walk-in fridge

The victim claims he was stripped naked and beaten after being accused of stealing a cellphone.

A shop manager and two security guards are out on bail after allegedly locking a Winnie Mandela Zone 5 resident in a walk-in fridge in the store.

Rabie Ridge SAPS spokesperson Const Jacob Nhlongo said the three suspects handed themselves over at Rabie Ridge police station on February 29 after they heard a case was opened against them.

They were charged with assault and granted R1 000 bail each in Thembisa Magistrate’s Court on February 29. The case was remanded until April 22.

David Mojapelo apparently went to buy meat for his wife’s fast food business on February 19.

While visiting friends afterwards, he was told people were looking for him as he allegedly stole another customer’s cellphone. They allegedly said he was caught on camera.

As he wanted to see the footage himself, he went back to the shop where he was allegedly beaten and stripped naked by the accused who put him inside a meat fridge.

He allegedly spent the night in the fridge.
