Seven people were arrested for alleged drug dealing at OR Tambo International Airport between February 16 and March 13.
In the process, cocaine and heroin worth more than R4-million were confiscated.
Col Brenda Muridili, police spokesperson, said in the latest incident on March 13, a passenger connecting from Dubai to Namibia was intercepted and cocaine to the estimated value of R1.2-m was found in his luggage.
All the arrests made were as the result of the airport’s stringent measures that had been put in place to detect any criminal activity, said Muridili.
The seven people were caught with the drugs in their luggage, wrapped around their body or swallowed. The airport narcotics detectives team continue to successfully oppose bail in court.
The team further ensures that watertight cases are presented in court, as the three latest convictions prove.
A 26-year-old Brazilian, Davane Da Silva Nascimento, was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment for dealing in drugs. She was arrested in August, 2018.
A 58-year-old American, Mendoza Conrado Sanchez, was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment. He was also arrested for dealing in drugs in March 2018.
