Disinfect your wheelie bins, warns metro

Waste collectors handle many bins on a daily basis and should they touch a contaminated bin, more could be contaminated.

The City of Ekurhuleni urges residents to wear gloves, wash their hands and disinfect their wheelie bins to curb the spread of the coronavirus.

This is due to the fact that waste collectors handle many bins on a daily basis.

“The gloves they wear are for personal protection and are therefore not regularly changed. Should one bin be contaminated, other bins handled thereafter may be contaminated,” said Themba Gadebe, metro’s spokesperson.

“We urge customers to take precautionary measures, such as washing of hands, wearing gloves and disinfecting the bins, to prevent contracting infections that may be caused by the multiple contact waste collectors have with many bins.”
