‘Confident’ armed robber (24) arrested in Cresslawn

Police came across the suspect as he was firing a shot into the air

Police patrolling in Cresslawn arrested a 24-year-old armed suspect on Saturday morning following the attempted robbery of three victims.

The suspect was caught red-handed on the corner of Green Avenue and Rigger Road while Sebenza police were doing a routine patrol in the area.

Sebenza SAPS spokesperson, Sgt Sharon Tsotsotso, on Monday said the police immediately arrested the suspect and also recovered a firearm related to another crime.

“It is alleged that the suspect came across the victims, a man and two women, pointed a firearm at them and confidently informed them that they were being robbed. He fired a shot into the air and it was during that time the police arrived.”

He was detained at Sebenza SAPS holding cells.

She said preliminary investigations revealed the firearm was stolen during a business robbery in Meyerton in July 2019. It is unknown whether the suspect was involved in the business robbery.

Tsotsotso said crime had almost come to a halt during the lockdown.
