Ex-Glen Marikana residents want rest to move to Putfontein, shots fired
'They wanted to move us by force and also claimed we were halting their processes and services at the Putfontein land'
Two suspects were arrested on Trig Road in Glen Marais on charges of attempted murder and discharging a firearm in public on June 28.
This came after an alleged shooting at Glen Marikana Informal Settlement.
Glen Marikana residents claim a group of men, travelling in five vehicles, arrived at the settlement and started asking about the whereabouts of the leaders.
Ntanganedzeni Netshiswinzhe, one the of Glen Marikana community leaders, told Express the men were from the informal settlement in Putfontein, Khutsong.

“All these men were wearing work suits and told us to move to Putfontein,” said Netshiswinzhe.
“They wanted to move us by force and also claimed we were halting their processes and services at the Putfontein land. They told us they could not get services like electricity because we are still here.
“More residents from Glen Marikana started coming out and demanded the men to leave, which was when two of the men took out firearms and started shooting. During the shooting, some of the men got in their vehicles and got away, while others ran away,” said Netshiswinzhe.
“Community members gave chase and the men ran into Glen Ballad Mall. The security officers at the mall asked what was happening and we told them what had happened and that the men were escaping.”

Netshiswinzhe said the security personnel had also heard the shooting and were on alert and assisted them in chasing and apprehending the suspects streets from the settlement.
“The security personnel really helped us as they acted quickly and managed to stop the suspects on Trig Road,” explained Netshiswinzhe.
Kempton Park SAPS was called and arrested the suspects.
“One firearm with its serial number on was found in possession of the suspects,” said Sgt Dipuo Ditshego, deputy spokesperson for Kempton Park SAPS.

“Two magazines and 12 rounds of ammunition were found. The suspects are facing charges of attempted murder and discharging a firearm in public.”
Angry Glen Marikana residents were seen at the scene where the suspects were apprehended. They asked the suspects why they were shooting.
No injuries were reported as a result of the incident.
