Glen Marais Mr SA finalist makes the cut to the Top 40

As time is running out, Hannes needs the support of Kempton Park to represent all locals and potentially be crowned Mr SA 2020.

On a sunny Friday, Hannes aimed to proudly announce Hoërskool Birchleigh's winner in front of all his felllow matric learners and highlight the talent hidden among them to be honoured. Teacher Thobile Nhlapo received Kagiso Lehutjo's R1 000 cash prize, courtesy of Mimmos in Glen Marais.

Top 40 Mr SA finalist Hannes van der Walt in an exhilarating announcement celebrated his breakthrough in the final stages of the 2020 competition.

“Now it’s a competition,” Hannes said.

The latest voting results revealed that he was rated fourth in the Top 50.

“We will continue with the mask challenge until the end of August. I urge my fellow Kemptonians to endorse this challenge as R2 of each mask I sell will go towards Mr SA’s Small Business Fund that forms part of a Covid-19 relief scheme.

“At the end of the competition, the proceeds from mask sales will be divided equally to nominated businesses,” Hannes explained.

During June, Hannes launched a design competition in Kempton schools as part of his second task in the competition.

Kempton’s Top 40 Mr SA finalist paid a special visit to Hoërskool Kempton Park to celebrate the winning designer of her school’s masks, Danielle van Heerden. Unfortunately, the winning designer from Birchleigh was not present at school on the day of handout. Luckily his fellow matric prefects wore his designer mask in his absence and proudly showcased the talent represented by their fellow pupil. Front: Schalk van der Merwe and Hannes van der Walt. On July 24, Hannes van der Walt and Schalk van der Merwe paid a visit to Hoërskool Birchleigh to announce their winner and supplied all matric learners with a free mask thanks to their winning designer, Kagiso Lehutjo in Grade 12.

He offered an opportunity for creative children to help him design masks.

Hannes’ local designer masks are each sold at R39.50 or R50, which includes a business logo.

The competition that was aimed at unveiling cocooned artistic qualities of learners in schools such as Hoërskool Kempton Park and Hoërskool Birchleigh.

Danielle van Heerden, a matric learner from Hoërskool Kempton Park, was the winning designer for the school, followed by the announcement of Hoërskool Birchleigh’s winning mask, designed by Kagiso Lehutjo.

In collaboration with Mimmos Glen Marais, each talented creator per school was rewarded with a R1 000 cash prize, courtesy of Mimmos’ owner, Schalk van der Merwe.

Hannes said: “In July I was congratulated for being the contestant who ordered the most masks, which stood at 615 masks.”

He said the finale of Mr SA 2020 is planned for September.

Hannes explained that the finalists’ progress will be judged 60 per cent based on task accomplishments, 30 per cent based on overall votes gained during the competition and the pageant portion of the competition will account for 10 per cent of the final results.
