Operation in Ekurhuleni yields arrest for 245 drunk drivers

A joint operation between metro police and SAPS members led to the arrest of 265 suspects in parts of Ekurhuleni last weekend. The operation was held from August 28 to 30 where 136 taverns were also visited for Covid-19 regulations compliance.

During roving roadblocks in the north, east and southern regions of the City of Ekurhuleni, 23 shebeens were visited and 60 suspects were arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol in Kempton Park, Thembisa, Clayville and Olifansfontein.

“Twenty suspects were also arrested in Kempton Park, Thembisa and Boksburg area for various crimes,” said Kobedi Mokheseng, EMPD spokesperson.

“Eight abandoned vehicles reported hijacked were recovered in Boksburg, Germiston and Katlehong areas before they were impounded to the Van Ryn Deep SAPS Benoni Vehicle Yard for safekeeping.

“The EMPD specialised services members from different units nabbed 106 drunk drivers.”

Mokheseng also said only nine pubs complied with the Disaster Management Act under Covid-19 regulations.

“Patrons at these pubs were under 50, displayed control books, sanitisers were available and closed before 10pm,” said Mokheseng.

“For now, the pubs where this was not adhered to got away with a strong tongue lash from law enforcers.”

Suspects arrested faced charges of malicious damage to property, possession of suspected stolen property, driving while under the influence of alcohol and possession of and dealing in drugs.
