Tawana Community NPO has dedicated its efforts to serve as a safety net in many areas for the needy to promote social change in local communities.
The NPO is a community-based welfare organisation, with the main focus of poverty alleviation through its soup kitchen, clothing programme and monthly food parcels.
The organisation also cares for abandoned and disabled children.
Tawana was founded by Norkem Park residents Sylvia Mofokeng, Isiah Chikosi and Andile Mlambo and is based in Norkem Park Extension Four.
They cover a wide geographical area which includes Tembisa.
According to Tawana Community NPO spokesperson, Sylvia Mofokeng, the organisation extends a helping hand to the most vulnerable members of the community, which are the elderly, the youth and abandoned children.

“We aim to help people who are facing daily poverty, the elderly who can’t fend for themselves, the disabled and abandoned children.
“We host a weekly soup kitchen which feeds up to 300 people in and around Kempton Park and Tembisa.
“We run an abandoned and disabled children’s programme and we take in abandoned children and give them a safe environment.”
Tawana also initiated a Dress a Friend Campaign where people can drop off clothes to distribute to community members in need.
“We have a monthly food parcel programme which provides for 12 child-headed families that we have identified.”
Tawana is challenged by the inconsistency of some supporters.
“This is due to Covid-19. We are also struggling with food parcels and transportation. We need logistical support for transportation.
“Our bakkie is old and constantly gives us problems. The major need is that the number of people we assist always increases compared to what we can offer. It’s never easy nor fair to turn back a hungry child on account of us not having enough.”
