Kemptonian reaches Mr SA Top 10
The finals are to be hosted in Cape Town, although a venue is still to be established, in which a virtual experience will be filmed. This will kick-off over the weekend of October 19-21.
Hannes van der Walt is excited about his announcement as a top 10 finalist of Mr SA 2020.
“This was hands down one of the most stressful moments in my life. In the moments before the announcement, you reconsider everything. Did I do enough? Will I make it? But the moment I saw my name was when everything came together,” he said.

When he had to reflect on his cutting-edge strategy that landed him in the top 10, he joked: “Well, definitely not my good looks.
“The greatest gift I have is to work with people, to make things happen, and that’s what I did. The amazing support from family, friends and Kempton Park helped me tremendously.”
Hannes said his family is thrilled and has been supportive right from the start.
“They’ve put up with so much through this journey while I was out doing tasks and changing the community little by little.”
But one wonders how Hannes considered his competition.
“All of them [finalists] are amazing people and have their own strong points, but I believe my experience in this field is my advantage. Not to be a titleholder for a pageant but to be a leader in one’s community. Someone who carries out family values that will impact a whole community through those values.”
For Hannes, the saying that charity begins at home is essential and has been true.

He said his biggest challenges proceeding to the finals would be to stay committed to his diet and keeping his body fit and ready for any photoshoot coming his way.
“I know we will be prepped for the photo shoots which includes spray tanning, hair, make-up, etc. We’ll also have to make appearances here and there as the top 10. I was told there will be a surprise or two.”
He said the winner will be announced on October 20, but that the finals show will only be aired to the public in early November.
The criteria to lead the decision to the titleholder would amount to 50 per cent determined by task performance, 30 per cent depends on public votes and 20 per cent will be decided by a judging panel on the evening of the event.
How will the title change Hannes’s life?
“I’m already doing what I’m doing without the Mr SA platform and will continue whether I win or not. If God wants to raise me to the Mr SA title then it will happen. As long as I do my best, God will do the rest.
“It is a massive privilege to be in this competition as a Kemptonian and I’m proud to be there representing Kempton Park. Thank you for all your support.”
