Mangosi shelter a safe haven for women
Founder Mavis Mavundla explained the organisation focuses on women who have pending cases against their abusive partners and are awaiting court proceedings to conclude.
Mangosi Community Feeding Scheme in Birchleigh North is a registered NPO breaking the silence about women who have experienced abuse.
The NPO also provides resources to assist women during high-risk periods.
The scheme urges victims to escape, take control and get help by providing support programmes free of charge to the affected residents.
The shelter accommodates abused women and children.

Founder Mavis Mavundla explained the organisation focuses on women who have pending cases against their abusive partners and are awaiting court proceedings to conclude.
The organisation also encourages women to break the chain of silence and enable victims to regain their dignity by becoming independent of the shelter in order to adequately support themselves.
“We provide shelter for abused women in Kempton Park – women who are in dire need to escape abusive relationships.
“We have fully furnished rooms available. We are planning to expand and have more rooms. We have a specific focus on women who have opened cases that are pending. We offer a home until the matter is legally resolved.
“We have 24-hour security on the premises and have a close working relationship with the local police station. We transport our women to the shops, the mall and we allow close family members to visit once a week.
“Women in abusive relationships who wish to stay in our shelter must be referred to us by a registered social worker. We are an organisation that prides itself on humanity, and one of our core values is confidentiality.
“We will not exploit people and their situations. At the moment, we only cater for women. We are planning to discuss the possibility of a programme for men.
“We are in a national crisis of domestic violence. Women need to be protected by the law and the community.
“We all know when abuse happens, but we choose to keep quiet. Our women are dying at the hands of their partners. What future are we hoping for when we kill mothers?
“Women need support. Remember, most abused women are in love with the perpetrator. They tend to hide the abuse and defend their partner. We need to stand together as women and men and lend a helping hand.
“If one knows of a victim in need of our services they should first refer them to a social worker for counselling and open a case at their nearest police station,” said Mavundla.
