Man struck and killed by lightning

A man was struck and killed by lightning on a farm in Elandsfontein on October 5.

“Lightning should never be taken lightly.”

These were words of Russel Meiring, a communications officer at ER24, after a man was struck and killed by lightning on a farm in Elandsfontein on October 5.

Meiring said paramedics arrived on the scene at 4.55pm to find the man, believed to be in his 30s, lying motionless on the field and surrounded by a number of his colleagues.

“Medics assessed the man and found that he had shown no signs of life. Unfortunately, nothing could be done for him as he was declared dead.

“Local authorities were on the scene for further investigations,” said Meiring.

“Knowing what to do during a storm can make a difference between life and death.”

The communications officer shared tips on how to stay safe when caught out in a thunderstorm.

• If no shelter is available, keep as low as possible.
• Get inside a hardtop, all-metal car, truck or SUV.
• Avoid leaning against vehicles.
• Avoid going near or entering large bodies of water.
• When the thunder begins, seek safe shelter indoors.
• Once inside, avoid electrical equipment of all kinds, electrical wires can conduct lightning.
• Do not wash your hands, shower, wash dishes or do laundry, metal pipes in the plumbing can also conduct lightning.
• High winds and hail can shatter glass, so stay away from windows, skylights and doors.
• Take care of your pets by bringing them inside. Monitor the weather daily.
• Should the forecast warn of lightning, postpone outings or events.
