MEC Lesufi attends to schools operating illegally in Ivory Park and Ebony Park
It was found that the schools were not registered with the Gauteng Department of Education.
The Gauteng Education MEC Panyaza Lesufi in collaboration with the law enforcement agencies visited schools allegedly operating illegally on October 8.
The schools visited were in Ivory Park and Ebony Park.
It was found that the schools were not registered with the Gauteng Department of Education.
According to Steve Mabona, Gauteng Department of Education’s spokesperson, during Lesufi’s visit and inspection, it was discovered that a school in Ivory Park was operating from four different locations.
“Some educators failed to produce legal identification documents and SACE compliant documents which is a requirement for an educator to teach learners in all our schools.
“The educators and principals were taken to the local police station for questioning on possible contravention of immigration legislation,” said Mabona.
“The MEC gave officials 48 hours to furnish him with the necessary information to make an informed decision on the way forward. He was not happy with the conditions which are not conducive to teaching and learning at both schools.

“One of the schools was shut down in 2019, but they mushroomed at a new location which was allegedly built two weeks ago.
“The departmental officials have started with a process to source placement for all affected learners in the event of the schools being closed. Necessary engagements will be facilitated with all affected parents,” said Mabona.
