Rhodesfield residents next to the Albertina Sisulu Freeway are in dispute about illegal dumping caused by fellow neighbours.
A complaint was received by Express when Willie Bezuidenhout, residing in Mohawk Street on a corner property adjacent the R21, pointed out the heaps of debris he has to face daily.
Themba Gadebe, metro spokesperson, said that workers were deployed to remove the illegal dumping in the open spaces and sidewalks on November 21.
“Residents in that area identified one of the neighbours who is the culprit and the city’s supervisor visited the household in question. Unfortunately, no adult was available to meet with city officials,” Gadebe confirmed.

Gadebe said that the members in the area exchanged contact numbers and promised to phone the city’s relevant office, should they witness someone dumping illegally in order to minimise the littering and illegal dumping.
Bezuidenhout informed Express on December 3 that there had been a clean-up in the area since his original complaint and that the bulk waste originating on a neighbouring property had been cleared.
“Since the city’s workers had cleared the area, the same culprit continued to illegally dump again. Even once all the rubbish was cleared it looked septic, but there’s no stopping it.”
Gadebe reiterated in the same statement that waste is not supposed to be dumped on the sidewalks.
“Domestic refuse is scheduled to be removed or collected on Wednesdays according to the waste calendar and residents are expected to put out their 240L bins for collection.
“The Kempton Park waste depot has been consistent in rendering the door-to-door service for a long time now. We, therefore, do not expect the residents in that area to dump their domestic refuse illegally on the sidewalks.
“We also discovered that residents do not hire bulk containers from the municipality when they do renovations of their properties. This causes building rubble to be dumped illegally in an open space and when approached they deny it and no one wants to take responsibility.”
