Know Your Local Organisation: Imperfect Moms Foundation
This week, we feature Imperfect Moms Foundation (IMF), which was initially established as a support group for young mothers in 2016 until it was registered as aN NPO in 2018.
Know Your Local NGOs is a new initiative of Express that attempts to bridge the gap that might exist between the community, corporates and local organisations.
The aim is to make local organisations that continuously make a difference in the community known to the public. These organisations include NPOs, NGOs and NPCs.
This week, we feature Imperfect Moms Foundation (IMF), which was initially established as a support group for young mothers in 2016 until it was registered as an NPO in 2018.
• What does the organisation do?
“IMF is a platform that gives young mothers a pillar of strength, motivation and acquiring knowledge on life skills and self-development. We work on helping young mothers become a reflection of their dreams and not their current reality,” said Onthatile Modise, founder of IMF.
• Where is it based?
“IMF is based in Kempton Park and spreads to various towns in the province into other less-developed provinces, as well as major cities like Durban and Cape Town.”
• Who is the organisation targeted to and who does it aim to help?
“Our focus on women is motivated by the huge impact that women have in society. We continue to broaden our horizon with youth-orientated initiatives and partnering with youth businesses towards becoming more inclusive and influential in our communities. IMF also looks forward to making new connections in the coming time.
The world is changing every day and we encourage those around us to be well equipped by being informed and coming together to raise a nation with good values.”
• What are some of your ongoing operations/campaigns/outreach programmes?
“IMF gave birth to its support forum as an open platform for young mothers to interact on mental health and empowering each other.
“IMF business forum: IMF launched a youth alliance initiative in youth development aimed at empowering young entrepreneurs between various youth businesses and IMF.
“The vision of Norkem Park Youth Alliance (NYA) is to bring much-needed reformation into our community as a result of the devastation of Covid-19. NYA also developed a Youth Farmers Market that launched in September. It is aimed at empowering youth invention and awareness. We also have the IMF volunteers’ division, a platform for youths to explore skills development, training and mentoring. Initiatives are focused on educating, gaining work experience and ethics.

“Share Warmth with IMF is a 67 Minutes for Mandela campaign. We spread warmth across Ekurhuleni, in partnership with well-known establishments in our community towards addressing poverty and injustices against women and children.
• What are some of the prominent challenges faced by the organisation?
“Like every organisation, being able to operate effectively and efficiently needs resources, from making calls to running a soup drive or accommodating people who are in need. Our challenges are mainly around the lack of resources to run the organisation, but we use what we have. We work from home and hire transportation services and try to save money for operational costs.
• What are the organisation’s needs?
“Finance and sponsorships, stationery, vehicle, clothing, toys, books, blanket donation, non-perishable food, vegetables and fruits, nappies and baby food.”
• How has Covid-19, regulations, restrictions and lockdown impacted the organisation?
“Covid-19 has been an unpleasant experience for everyone. National laws encourage us to live a less social life, which has its benefits; however, the holistic impact is a tragedy. More than ever, more people are in need and our shortage of resources is a major influence on how effective we can help. Nonetheless, we choose to remain positive and creative in sustaining the mission of the organisation.
