Hectares of dagga torched in Bredell
The trees were destroyed by EMPD after they received a tip-off about a nearby plot full of marijuana vegetation.
Hectares of dagga (marijuana) trees were uprooted by the EMPD. During a crime-prevention operation, officers of EMPD’s Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) were patrolling in the streets of Bredell when they were allegedly stopped by the concerned local CPF on February 24.
“The CPF members told officers about their concerns about a certain nearby plot full of marijuana vegetation, suspected to be unlawfully panted,” said Kobeli Mokheseng, the spokesperson.
“Officers responded swiftly to the abandoned plot on Sixth Avenue where they uncovered and removed hectares of the forbidden plant on the premises. The trees were removed and destroyed through a fire at a safe and designated area.”

Mokheseng also told Express that the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE)’s Energy Department was summoned on site. “EMPD officers noticed that the external electrical mini-substation, fixed in the yard, was somehow tampered with. During intervals, the plot will be visited by CoE officials until liable owners are identified and served accordingly,” explained Mokheseng.
The trees are estimated to be worth R100 000.
