Local author is motivating the unmotivated young ladies of Ekasi

“Young women would be better able to handle life when they get older if they are equipped with insight about the facts of life,” said Mackay.

Local author Shamil Mackay (26) continues to be a beacon of hope to young ladies in Thembisa, despite a pandemic and ongoing racial justice protests. Mackay is leading the charge to a brighter future and making history along the way.

“It’s not easy for women. They’ve been socialised to believe women belong in the house, that they shouldn’t make choices and shouldn’t speak up. “We still have a long way to go, especially in terms of teaching girls what they’re capable of and don’t have to adhere to stereotypes. “Young girls are often referred to as ‘pretty’. It’s a compliment we’ve all been taught to offer and seek out. However, aiming to be portrayed as something other than beautiful, such as smart, imaginative, hardworking or kind, will stick with you much longer than ‘pretty’ will. “Young women would be better able to handle life when they get older if they are equipped with insight about the facts of life,” said Mackay. “Many women today know Esther, Deborah, Sarah and so forth in the Bible, but they don’t know who they are. They don’t know the role that God has designed for them because they think the pulpit is all there is to ministry. That is why we have many women on the pulpit but few women in the prayer closet. We admire the heels, pictures and protocols more than the sacred place. “We admire crowds and fanaticism from followers more than being celebrated by heavenly beings. The time of women of prayer was mostly seen through our mothers and grandmothers. They would gather from different denominations to pray and fast in the mountains. “Today, we are unable to do that because of competition, pride and jealousy. Take the time to reflect on your desires, short- and long-term goals and what you hope to achieve.”
