Application for pensioner’s property rebates made easy

“Pensioner’s rebate is a discount offered by the municipality if you are older than 60 years of age and your joint income is less than R19.200 per month.”

“All pensioners need to take note that the municipality needs to cancel all your rebates on property taxes by June 30,” said Stefan Hough, chairperson of Birchleigh Community Forum.

New applications need to be submitted every four years and to be completed before July 1 when new property taxes on your new property valuations become valid.

“Pensioner’s rebate is a discount offered by the municipality if you are older than 60 years of age and your joint income is less than R19.200 per month. However, the application process is not elderly friendly, due to all the venues that need to be visited in order to obtain information and authorisation on your submitted documents,” Hough explained.

As in the past, the Birchleigh DRC offers a one-stop service at their church community hall in Olienhout Street, Birchleigh.

These services will be offered from June 1 to June 3 from 9am to noon.

Those interested in the one-stop service need to bring along:
• A black pen
• Their ID and a photocopy thereof
• Your most recent municipal account
• Your Section 49 Notice from the municipality, depicting your latest property valuation, if available
• If your joint income is below R19.200, bank statements of the last three months, stamped by a bank authority and indicating your income and medical funds premium, if separate
• A pocket calculator.

New application forms will be made available and assistance will be offered for the elderly, or bed-ridden pensioners, with the completion of your applications.

“Commissioners of oath will be available to authenticate your submitted documents and a representative of the one-stop team will deliver all the completed application forms to the relevant municipal officer’s desk, for the processing of your application.”

Pensioners can assemble in the church in case of unpleasant weather, where all Covid-19 health measures will be adhered to.
