Chefs with Compassion fed 283 588 individuals with a cup of soup in honour of Nelson Mandela Day.
The organisation challenged local professional chefs, businesses and organisations from all the nine provinces to be part of the initiative by cooking in their own kitchens and donating the soup to beneficiaries in their immediate communities.
The organisation successfully smashed their target of 67 000 litres of soup donated to those in need.
Ekurhuleni West College junior chef Busisiwe Tema was one of the chefs to support the programme.
The Ivory Park resident bestowed the spirit of giving to the community by preparing 80 litres of warm mushroom and butternut soup, which fed children from Bokamoso Orphanage Home in Kaalfontein and the local residents.
“Being part of the #67000litres of soup campaign served as a great opportunity for me and my team chefs, Thagkatso Maja, Elizabeth and Nomthandazo Khoza. We were able to show young people in our communities they can make a difference,” Tema said.
She said reaching out to the Chefs with Compassion organisation via email to be part of the volunteer chefs and obtaining sponsorship for the campaign has also presented various advantages and opportunities, which motivated her to put more work into her career as a chef and having the privilege to work with celebrity chef Citrum Khumalo, who offered to be her mentor throughout her career.
“Kudos go to the Chefs with Compassion for providing a platform for all the volunteering chefs, businesses and organisations to feed the hungry.”
