Kemptonian wins Miss Deaf SA 2021

During her time as Miss Deaf SA, she plans to host charity events to benefit deaf schools.

Kempton Park resident Chanika Viljoen won this year’s Miss Deaf SA title during a gala held on September 11.

Chanika was born deaf, but that didn’t stop her from reaching for the stars and being a role model for people with disabilities.

“Being deaf doesn’t mean you are dumb, as hearing doesn’t make you smart. Deaf people can do anything hearing people can do except hear. You are capable, talented and also have rights. Believe in God and you will achieve everything in life,” Viljoen explained to Express.

She described the moment she was announced as the winner.

“They called the first and second princesses. I held my hands so tightly and believed in myself. Then finally my name was called. I was shocked and cried tears of joy.”

During her time as Miss Deaf SA, she plans to host charity events to benefit deaf schools.

CEO of Miss, Mr and Mrs Deaf SA Janice Jonker said the pageant aims to improve the self-esteem and confidence of deaf people in South Africa.
