Possible truck hijacking syndicate nabbed

“When the truck was searched, a signal jammer with a car battery was found as well as gloves, a reflective jacket and overall jacket, a firearm and a selection of cellphones.”

On October 5, Fidelity was alerted to a truck hijacking on Olifants Road in Thembisa, which led to the arrest of two suspects.

According to Wahl Bartmann, chief executive officer of Fidelity Services Group, the truck had allegedly been hijacked by an unmarked white vehicle with blue lights near the Thembisa Mall.

Fidelity’s Specialised Intervention Unit was requested to assist with the recovery.

“On arrival, it found SAPS and other security members standing with the truck that was still idling.

“The trailer legs had already been dropped in preparation for the horse to be interchanged so it was clear the suspects were after the load on board,” said Bartmann.

He said while on the scene, the Fidelity team noted a truck driving out from the mall side of the road.

“The truck was intercepted with two potential suspects. When the truck was searched, a signal jammer with a car battery was found as well as gloves, a reflective jacket and overall jacket, a firearm and a selection of cellphones.

“Both suspects were detained, and the suspect’s truck and a silver Honda Jazz were taken to the pound in Benoni.

“On further investigation, these vehicles were found to be linked to at least one more hijacking that occurred on October 4 in Kempton Park,” said Bartmann.
