DA mayoral candidate Refiloe Nt’sekehe:

“The key deliverables under the DA to revive the economy of Ekurhuleni are twofold.

“The first is to urgently fix the electricity supply in the municipality, the second is to make sure that there is value for money spent on the CAPEX budget.

“To do this, the DA will ensure that critical funded vacancies in this department are filled in line with the recommendations made by the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (NERSA).

“We will incentivise Independent Power Producers (IPPs) to feedback into the grid so that like other DA-run municipalities, we free ourselves from the shackles of Eskom.

“We will also ensure that there is an investment in new infrastructure and a budget set aside for crucial maintenance of existing infrastructure.

“Without a stable infrastructure and a secure supply of electricity, a municipal economy cannot survive.

“Ekurhuleni has an expanded 39% unemployment rate and this figure has been on the rise since 2016.

“No businesses nor entrepreneurs will invest in Ekurhuleni in its current state.

“To grow the economy, we need to keep the lights on and invest in our infrastructure.”
