Son steals and sells father’s gun

The suspected theft of his fathers licensed handgun has landed a 21-year-old man from Ivory Park Extension Nine in police detention.

Police arrested a 21-year-old man from Ivory Park’s Extension Nine for allegedly stealing his father’s licensed weapon.

Col Baba Mpotoane, the acting station commander of the Ivory Park SAPS, said the suspect is accused of stealing the pistol on October 18 and selling it.

The suspect was apprehended at his residence early on the morning of October 19.

He was charged with stealing a handgun and is scheduled to appear in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court.

Mpotoane is outraged that someone other than the owner could gain access to a handgun.

“A licensed firearm is issued subject to specific terms and conditions, which are described and understood by those to whom it is issued. One of those prerequisites is appropriate handgun storage,” Mpotoane said.
