Organisations serve the community

Community organisations partner up to make a difference

Two of Thembisa’s young leaders continue to touch the community they serve under the auspices of their Thembisa-based community organisations.

Obedience Mkhabela and Palesa Mailula, who are no strangers to our readers, joined hands in a partnership that they define as a relationship necessary to move this community forward.

Mkhabela has worked with the Thembisan community as a journalist of Thembisan and Mailula has been featured in previous reportage.

This duo has yet again partnered to bring initiatives that do not only bring change but initiatives that touch lives.
Dipalesa Foundation and Mkhabela Obedience Foundation (MOF) recently visited Tawana Community NPO in Phomolong Section to donate clothes to the organisation.

The donation came after the two community organisations completed their first project, Don’t Lose It Bin It.

This was a cleaning project and campaign initiated by Dipalesa Foundation, to advocate for a cleaner Thembisa.

“Together we can make Thembisa clean again. We visited the corner of Tlamatlama Primary School and cleaned the dumping area next to the school, providing a clean and safe space for learners who pass by there,” said Mailula, founder of Dipalesa Foundation.

“We need donations of cleaning materials as this is an ongoing project. We need more plastic bags, gloves, masks and sanitisers,” added Mailula.

The Tawana visit was communicated with Kwinda Mbuso, Tawana Community NPO media liaison and PR intern.
Mkhabela said the donations were well received and the members of the community were also called to feast on the donations.

“This was our first visit but the reception from the centre was heartwarming. We are planning another visit. The founder won our hearts when she shared the story of how the centre started,” said Mkhabela.

Kwinda added it is always a pleasure to see a group of young people doing positive things and initiating programmes that do not only touch children’s lives but those of elders in the community as well.

“We have realised the community has been hit hard by the effects of Covid-19, so we continue with our soup kitchen programmes that accommodate plus minus 300 people, but our biggest challenge is funding to maintain our programmes,” said Kwinda.

To donate pre-loved clothes, non-perishable food items, sanitary towels, cleaning equipment or toiletries, contact Mkhabela on 073 768 2239 or Mailula on 063 060 6508 or at mkhabelaobediencefoundation@gmail.com or check their Facebook pages.
