Former senior police officer sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment
Former police officer found guilty of culpable homicide and sentenced to 8 years in jail, with two years suspended.
Former SAPS superintendent Barend du Pessannie (50) was sentenced to eight years in prison with two years suspended on a murder charge in Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court on December 30, 2021.

On October 25, 2009, at around 19:00 an altercation occurred in the accused’s home in Bonaero Park, during which the accused severely injured the victim who was hospitalised and died the next day at OR Tambo Memorial Hospital.
After the accused could not be found at his prior address, a warrant for his arrest was issued.
With the help of Pretoria investigators, the accused was apprehended at a shopping centre on June 5, 2021.
Following numerous court appearances, he was found guilty of culpable homicide.
“This demonstrates that patience and hard work pay off and that no one is above the law,” said Capt Jethro Mtshali, spokesperson for the Kempton Park SAPS.
