New business bowls league launched
The Lion of Avion Business League concept came about by the club executives who were approached by surrounding businesses asking for ideas to encourage community growth and upliftment.
Lockdown and Covid-19 challenges during the past two years saw detrimental effects on several businesses in South Africa.

Restrictions also limited the ability of businesses to network with each other to grow their net worth.
Avion Park Bowling Club has kept its finger on the pulse of growing and positively affecting its local community. It recently launched its business bowling league, the Lion of Avion.
The Lion of Avion Business League concept came about by the club executives who were approached by surrounding businesses asking for ideas to encourage community growth and upliftment.
Avion Park Bowling Club subsequently identified the change in the business landscape locally and actively wanted to get involved. Therefore, they decided on a way to provide a practical and social avenue where business owners could socialise as well as talk shop.
“As businesses were impacted by the wave of Covid-19 and lockdowns, we also noticed an impact on the game of bowls in South Africa,” said Cobus Galloway, chairperson of Avion Park Bowling Club.
The league was launched in late January and Avion Park invites all businesses to participate and enter the league.
The entry consists of four individuals, two of who are to be unregistered players. The entry fee is R2 800 per team or R700 per person.
Teams without enough players can ask the club for help to fill spaces.
Prize value for first place is set at R14 000 while second place will walk away with R8 000 and third place R6 000.
Prize-giving takes place on the last day of the league on March 24. League games take place every Thursday from 18:00.
Avion Park Bowling Club, now in Deodar Street Pomona, moved its premises with a vision to add immense value to the bowling fraternity by building South Africa’s first seven rink rhino turf bowling green.
Over R2.5-million was invested into this vision, with further plans of building more greens to grow bowling in South Africa as well as to grow the club.
“Bowling is not just about the game but also about the gathering of people in a community and building good relationships to uplift that community in a better way through a great game,” said Cobus.
Avion encourages the local community to visit the club and consider participating in a social game of bowls.
