According to Mahlatse Mabela (25), she woke up to smoke inside the house at around 02:35 on January 7.
“I woke as my child was restless. I saw smoke billowing into her room from the garage. The fire devoured the garage and burned the bakkie that was in the garage and rooms, including catering equipment and a tuck shop,” said Mabela.
“It’s been a terrible loss. We did not know what we were going to do next. We had no clue where we were heading or what would happen. However, Philip heard of our story,” said Mabela.

Dolo ensured that the family was assisted in restoring the property to its former splendour by employing a builder and getting building materials.
“I was saddened to learn that the family home burned down. This is why we decided to rebuild and provide them with a haven with the support of contractors and the community,” said Dolo.
He underlined the importance of communities assisting one another in times of need.
He clarified that he does not consider himself a hero, but a philanthropist who helps the poor.
