SANBS updates Covid-19 protocols at donor centres

SANBS reminds blood donors it has updated its eligibility and deferral criteria for donors.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is hard-pressed to collect much-needed blood amidst its months-long struggle to stabilise blood stock levels.
As the pandemic draws on, gaining access to mobile blood drive venues remains a challenge.
SANBS reminds blood donors it has updated its eligibility and deferral criteria for donors.
The criteria are consistent with national public health guidelines, adjusting frequently and as needed.
These new deferral measures include:
• Asymptomatic donors can donate blood, including healthcare workers
• The deferral period for direct contacts with symptoms of infection changes from 14 to seven days from the date of complete clearance of symptoms
• The deferral period for individuals who have travelled overseas is reduced from 14 to 10 days
• Individuals with confirmed cases of Covid-19 infection will be deferred for seven days from the date of complete clearance of symptoms and
• Asymptomatic individuals with confirmed cases of Covid-19 infection will be deferred for seven days from the date of the positive Covid-19 test
Protocols for assessing donors and staff, and the cleaning of donor centres are in place to prevent infections by exposure.
SANBS stated that with the necessary precautions in place, it is safe for donors to visit fixed and mobile donor centres to give blood.
Blood products are needed for patients undergoing surgery, cancer treatment and to save lives following traumas such as motor vehicle collisions.
SANBS also follows the guidelines prescribed by the NICD and WHO to promote Covid-19-safe interactions at all its fixed and mobile donor sites.
