Legends host golf day, soccer clinic
The event's purpose was to bring hope and joy to children in schools, particularly those interested in sports .
Bafana Bafana legends arrived in Johannesburg to join Neil Tovey's squad for the MetroWired Legends Golf Day held at the Bryanston Country Club on March 29.
In addition, Doctor Khumalo led the football clinic at St Stithian's College with the institution's boys' and girls' first teams and children from the Shoes Of Wisdom Foundation in Tembisa and Johannesburg CBD.
According to Ayanda Kubheka, executive director of Shoes Of Wisdom Foundation, giving back to the community sparks change and has a good impact on society.
“As an organisation, it was an opportunity for us to learn and grow. The initiative can help shape children's characters and set them up for a successful future if they put the lessons into practice.
“We appreciate the encouragement and opportunities to learn. We may be the brains behind the Shoes Of Wisdom programme, but raising children to be distinguished future leaders who will contribute to the alignment of gender equality, economic development, and sustainability,” said Kubheka.
Nathi Mthethwa, South Africa's Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture said the event highlighted the essential role of sporting legends.
“As a nation, we should never forget our heroes or where we come from, for if that happens the next generation will have no reference and history will judge us harshly.
“Our ability as a country to celebrate milestones is what helps us draw inspiration to perform to the maximum, even when things are difficult. I am delighted that the Class of 96 and all the other Bafana Bafana legends have not been forgotten because today we walk tall thanks to the work they put in.
“I understand that this is just one of many festivities to come, but I am glad to see that something is being done. We're also impressed to see that they coached clinics on the day; this is a clear example of how legends can inspire future generations of footballers, from schools to clubs, as Doctor Khumalo will do at St Stithians.
“This is a crucial aspect of growth that should occur throughout the country,” said Mthethwa.
The MetroWired Class Of 96 Legends Golf Day event was supported by media partner SABC.
