‘Why is there no service delivery in Terenure?’ – Residents

The non-existence of service delivery in Terenure has left community members in distress as CoE continues to ‘ignore’ their needs.

Service delivery seems to be non-existent in Terenure.

This is due to the residents expressing their frustration of not getting much joy regarding their numerous complaints to the City of Ekurhuleni (CoE).

Lack of maintenance and grass cutting in parks are among the issues faced by the Terenure community.

Street lights are among the community’s concerns as they mentioned that about 15 streets in the suburb are without functioning lights.

“There are streets where there are only three lights working but the majority of the streets have no working street lights,” said Lindi Fourie, a Terenure resident.

“It is completely dark at night and it has become very dangerous for people to travel in our streets.

“We are also worried that this will fuel criminal activity in the area as already there are more hijackings, home robberies and people being robbed in the streets.”

Stormwater drains are blocked and damaged.

Potholes are also among the resident’s frustrations. Various streets are riddled with potholes to a point that motorists tend to travel on one lane to avoid them.

“The community has complained about the damage to their vehicles due to the potholes that have been reported since last year,” explained Fourie.

“The leaking fire hydrant up the road is a cause of the road erosion. The leak was noticed months ago and reported on it, however, nothing was done about it.

“This is the case with all our complaints. We are encouraged to report issues to the CoE and when we do nothing gets done about it.

“There is no budget, so we hear. So where is our money going because we pay rates and taxes?”

Residents in one of the yards affected by the supposed water leak have had to replace their entire driveway as it had gotten to a point where they were unable to park their vehicles inside their yard.

Fourie also told Express that children are not able to utilise some of the parks due to their unsafe state.

“We have beautiful parks but they are not being maintained. No cleaning gets done and the grass does not get cut.

“All we see is the grass being burnt in the parks. We can’t recall when last we had regular maintenance at our parks.”

Some of the residents also agreed with Fourie that the long grass in open spaces was a safety risk as criminals use it to conceal themselves.

Sewage leaks and blocked drains are among the items on the list of concerns but community members say even these complaints have fallen on deaf ears.

“There are homes whose walls have structural damage, damaged driveways and damp backyards due to a leak that we haven’t been able to track.

“We are not sure where the leak is located, but it needs to be attended to.

“People’s homes are being damaged by the water that keeps pouring into their yards. This was reported and as far as we know nothing has been done about it, not even an inspection.”

Residents affected by the supposed water leak have had to replace their entire driveway.

In another household, Express witnessed how the home occupants had to purchase water boots for them to be able to make their way to the washing line in the backyard.

Lack of maintenance and grass cutting in parks is among the issues faced by the Terenure community.

“Our stormwater drains are blocked and damaged.

“We don’t condone littering and appeal to the community to refrain from such acts in our area; we also need the CoE to come to provide the services we pay for,” added Fourie.

“We want answers but most importantly we need action to be taken to attend to the problems we are faced with as the Terenure community.”

In requesting comment from CoE, Express only received a request from CoE to provide the names of the streets with with non-functioning street lights.

No further comment was received.
