Choral festival brings joy to Ekurhuleni elderly people
Older persons choirs from Daveyton, Kwa-Thema, Thembisa and retired teachers, nurses and lawyers took part.
Over 300 older persons from all over Ekurhuleni gathered in one voice at the Actonville Community Hall recently for the Ekurhuleni Regional Older Persons Choir Festival.

A total of 10 choirs from areas such as Daveyton, Kwa-Thema, Thembisa and Tsakane were each given a platform to render two choral songs to win gold trophies.
Among the participants who battled it out were retired teachers, nurses and lawyers.
Organised by the Gauteng Department of Social Development in collaboration with the Department of Sports, Arts, Culture and Recreation and the City of Ekurhuleni and Gauteng Older Persons Forum, the event was aimed at promoting social interaction among older persons.

The festival also aimed to promote a healthy lifestyle amongst older persons as well as educate them about their rights.
Social work policy developer Modiegi Phakoe said: “Older persons choral festivals are one of the key active ageing programmes which afford the elderly an opportunity to showcase their abilities and to enable them to participate in society in accordance with their basic rights, needs, capacities and preferences as enshrined in the older Persons Act 13 of 20.”
