Local police warn students about violence and bullying in schools

The Ivory Park social crime prevention desk visited the Ivory Park Secondary School on October 28, along with other crime awareness role players to address the students on bullying.

The police were accompanied to the school by members of the youth crime prevention desk, officials from community safety and members of SADAG. The particular focus was on tackling drug abuse and anxiety in communities.

Captain Ben Matimulane, spokesperson for the Ivory Park SAPS said bullying was thoroughly discussed during a dialogue held separately between the boy and girl learners.

He added that learners were encouraged to use this dialogue to express their challenges both in and outside school.

“The primary reason we visited this school was that they had several recent bullying incidents. The police felt it opportune to intervene.

“Those who are at the receiving end of bullying were strongly encouraged to speak out through the outlets they are comfortable in and for the bullies to desist from this disturbing behaviour.

“Bullies were warned about the consequences of bullying, including the strong possibility of acquiring a criminal record,” said Matimulane.
