Mob justice leaves one dead in Winnie Mandela

The other two suspects were captured by police and sent to Tembisa hospital while being guarded by police.

When the teams arrived, a group of people dispersed, leaving three men bound and blindfolded on the ground with tires around their necks.

According to bystanders, the three were taken from Zone 4 where they were suspected of house robbery.

“It is alleged that the men broke into two different rooms in the same yard. In one of the rooms, they allegedly stole a cellphone and R900 cash.

“When the men attempted to enter another room a woman, who tried to barricade the door with her foot, was shot,” said Constable Patricia Mgijima, communications officer for Tembisa Police Station.

“The victim was taken to Tembisa Hospital in critical condition. Hearing the screams of the victim, the community came out in numbers, cornered all three suspects and started assaulting them, while dragging them to the ‘braai stand’.

“Two of the suspects were rescued by police and taken to Tembisa Hospital under police guard while the third suspect succumbed to his injuries. All three are unknown in the area,” said Mgijima.

Brigadier Roopchand Sookraj, station commander of the Tembisa Police Station, condemned the act of criminality in the community.

“It is a good idea to have a neighbourhood watch with its recognised patrollers and citizen arrest. The community must refrain from taking the law into their own hands as they are incriminating themselves,” said Sookraj.
