Following the fire that destroyed their shacks on January 25, approximately eight families from the Kanana Ext Five informal settlement were left without a place to live.

According to reports, the fire started in a shack where a resident was cooking.
Firefighters and the law enforcement agencies were present and no injuries recorded.
The families are seeking donations to help them rebuild and restore their homes.
Resident Katiso Mohlohlo said the fire was unexpected and he felt sad to have lost all of his possessions.

“I cannot fathom how the fire began and was astonished at how quickly it spread. I witnessed the burning of my informal house but was powerless to stop it.
Seeing my possessions burning to the ground broke my heart. I’m thankful that I’m still alive and sustained no injuries.
To help them rebuild their shacks, Mohlohlo is pleading with the community to help them with corrugated iron.
“Since we now need donations, we would welcome support from the community. The corrugated iron will be used to help us restore our homes,” said Mohlohlo.
