Local love birds celebrate 50 years of their union
The couple has lived in the same house in Birch Acres for the last 45 years after moving to South Africa from Bulawayo.
Long-time Birch Acres residents Patrick and Joy van der Berg celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on Friday.

The couple has lived in the same house in Birch Acres for the last 45 years after moving to South Africa from Bulawayo.
Patrick and Joy have three children; Shaun, Marie, and Adrian and three grandchildren; Jay, Jessica and Angelique.
Although the couple didn’t have many opportunities and experiences in life, they did their best to provide for their children and to make the best of what they had.
They shared their tips for newly married couples.

“Love and trust each other and don’t have secrets,” said Joy.
“Run,” joked Patrick.
For couples married for a while, the two said husbands should listen to their wives’ needs.
“Don’t take each other for granted.”
“Love, honour and respect each other. Discuss everything before you do things,” Patrick and Joy said.
