Sergeant Dipuo Ditshego said that the visit wasn’t only aimed at celebrating Women’s Month but was also an opportunity for officers to speak to women and children about GBV.

“This was not our first visit to Max Squatter camp.
“Many women withdraw cases against their abusers because of hunger so we hoped to empower them and tell them to stand up for themselves,” she said.
She added on most GBV cases women and children are abused either physically, emotionally or economically.
“There are also men who are going through the same abuse and they are afraid to report the crimes so the aim was to educate residents,” she said.
Ditshego said victims of GBV who are to scared to report abuse to the police should make contact with a local NGO or place of safety.

She added that victims of GBV can visit their nearest police station because every station should have an identified police officer to deal with GBV cases.
“As police we ensure that victims of GVB are protected,” said Sergeant Ditshego.
“Our challenge is that victims often retact cases against their abusers so we try to do these awareness drives to educate victims,” she said.
