Locals mark World Blood Donor Day

Less than 1% of South Africans are blood donors.

World Blood Donor Day was commemorated on June 14.

The day aimed to create and spread awareness among residents about donating blood.

It allows global blood donor organisations to celebrate and thank their donors who save lives.

Kempton Express visited the SANBS Kempton Park Donor Centre to find out their issues and their plans for the near future.

“In winter, we do not have many donors, so we still need a lot of blood.

“The donation rate goes down in winter because of various reasons like flu and we do not have a lot of blood drives in winter,” said donor relations practitioner Peter Mafela.

The Kempton Park Donor Centre will host a blood drive at Festival Mall on June 24, from 10:00 to 15:00.

Mafela urged potential first-time donors to attend the drive to learn more about blood donations.

“There’s a first time for everything. Come to our blood donation site and attend our blood drives.

“Observe, ask questions to those that are donating blood and then take it from there”, he said.
