Cyclist (50) dies following Great North Road crash

"A case of culpable homicide has been registered at the Kempton Park Police Station for further investigations."

A 50-year-old cyclist died following a collision on Great North Road yesterday, November 9.

According to EMPD spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa officers from the EMPD’s High Speed Unit were called to the scene near the bridge over the R21.

“A 50-year-old male cyclist, was hit by a motor vehicle.”

She added that on arrival, officers found VW Polo Vivo hatchback stopped next to an unresponsive body, covered with a space blanket.

“Medical experts were called and the cyclist was declared dead on the scene.”

“The 48-year-old male driver of the vehicle did not sustain any visible injuries and received treatment for shock on scene,” said Thepa.

The circumstances surrounding the crash are not known.

“A case of culpable homicide has been registered at the Kempton Park Police Station for further investigations.”

Thepa said the damaged bicycle and the VW Polo involved in the incident were taken to the EMPD vehicle impound for safekeeping.
