Still in Love: Svend and Alice’s 56-year journey in Kempton Park

From a chance meeting on a Danish staircase to a life of shared adventures and deep devotion, Svend and Alice Andersen marked their wedding anniversary on May 14 — a heartwarming tribute to nearly a century of love, laughter, and togetherness.

Svend (92) and Alice Andersen (87) marked a remarkable milestone in their enduring love story as they celebrate their wedding anniversary on May 14.

Originally from Denmark, the couple has called Kempton Park home for the past 56 years, building a life filled with love, shared interests, and treasured memories.

Their story began many years ago on the staircase of a boarding house in Denmark.

“We met on the staircase and started talking,” recalled Alice.

“I thought he was quite handsome and kind.”

Svend was equally taken: “Alice was very beautiful and she still is to this day,” he said warmly.

A shared passion for sports, especially rowing, and a desire to see the world brought them closer together.

Svend, a skilled athlete, and Alice soon realised they wanted to spend the rest of their lives together.

“We fell in love and wanted to get married before we started travelling and enjoying life together,” said Alice.

When asked about the secret to their happy marriage, Alice shared timeless advice.

“Doing things together, having patience with one another, being honest, kind, and tolerant. We always did everything together, and that hasn’t changed, we still do.”

Among their fondest memories is their romantic honeymoon in Rome, but they also cherish years of travelling the world and celebrating special occasions like Christmas, Easter, and Midsummer (Sankt Hans) with family and friends in true Danish tradition.

Neighbour Esther Smuts described the couple as a blessing to those around them.

“They are such kind people. You’ll never lack anything when you have them in your life,” she said.

“I’m grateful to have them in mine, especially at their age; it’s rare to see a love that has lasted so beautifully.”

The Andersens’ enduring bond is a testament to love, companionship, and the simple joys of a life well-lived together.
