Kempton Park cable thefts surge despite city efforts

Between January and June 2025, 20 arrests were made, 20 cases were placed on the court roll, and eight convictions were obtained.

Cable theft continues to plague residents of Kempton Park Extensions 2 to 4, with incidents reported almost daily this year.

Despite the City of Ekurhuleni’s efforts to replace stolen cables, frustration is mounting as residents question whether this is a sustainable solution.

Ward 16 DA councillor Jaco Terblanche and Gauteng MPL Michael Waters confirmed that the city has been actively replacing stolen infrastructure but stressed that more lasting interventions are urgently needed.

“The SAPS Essential Infrastructure Unit for the Ekurhuleni district confirmed it is aware of the ongoing problem,” said Terblanche.

“Between January and June 2025, 20 arrests were made, 20 cases were placed on the court roll, and eight convictions were obtained.”

However, according to the ward councillor, residents often encounter difficulties when attempting to report these crimes.

“Police frequently indicate they cannot open a case because the cables belong to the municipality, meaning only the City of Ekurhuleni can officially report such thefts.”

In response to an enquiry sent on August 5, City spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said the municipality is adopting a multi-pronged approach to address the issue.

“The EMPD is increasing law enforcement, implementing stricter regulations for scrap metal dealers, and raising awareness about the impact of cable theft. We encourage residents to report suspicious activities without delay,” Dlamini said.

He added that a dedicated task team is already in place, working jointly with SAPS, PRASA, EMPD, and private security companies to patrol hotspot areas and protect municipal infrastructure.

Residents can report cable theft or unlawful activities by calling 011 999 9951/9959.

“Community members are key in fighting this crime. By reporting illegal activity to law enforcement teams, residents play a vital role in protecting essential infrastructure,” Dlamini said.
