City manager Kagiso Lerutla has encouraged municipal employees to invest in their personal and professional development to better position themselves for future opportunities.
Lerutla was addressing staff during the Fixing the Frontline programme at the Roads and Stormwater Depot in Thembisa on April 15.
During his engagement, he emphasised the importance of continuous upskilling, noting that the City of Ekurhuleni is working towards becoming more self-reliant in service delivery.

Speaking to workers at the depot, Lerutla said while opportunities for promotion within the municipality are expected, they require the necessary qualifications and training.
“Personal growth is a shared responsibility. As an individual, you cannot rely solely on the municipality for your development. If you aspire to management, you need to actively work towards it,” he said.
He encouraged employees to make use of available resources, including internal bursaries and training opportunities, by engaging with the human resources department.
“You cannot work for 15 years and assume you are eligible for a management position. There are various factors that must be considered before appointments are made,” Lerutla added.
He was joined during the visit by head of department for strategy and corporate planning Tsholofelo Koopedi and head of department for service delivery co-ordination Lesego Sentsho, who accompanied him during the walkabout at the depot.
