Illegal dumpers’ truck impounded
The illegal dumpers were found to be driving without a driver's licence and their truck was not roadworthy.
Members of the EMPD impounded a truck on Pretoria Road next to Vlei Street on December 9.
According to Inspector Van Niekerk who was on the scene, four males were caught illegally dumping in the veld.
The four men were fined R3 000.
“This area is always used for illegal dumping and today we were fortunate enough to catch them in the act.
“This should be an example for all other people who think they can do as they please in the city,” said Van Niekerk.
The truck was also found to be not roadworthy and the driver had no driver’s licence in his possession.
EMPD media liaison officer Kobeli Mokheseng appealed to the community to assist in keeping the City of Ekurhuleni clean.
“Illegal dumping has a serious effect on the environment and the city has a responsibility on behalf of the residents to protect the environment.
“It is one of the biggest challenges we face as it causes bacteria, diseases, rodent infestations, water, soil and air pollution and blocks our water network system,” said Mokheseng.
He added that offenders of illegal dumping could be fined between R500 to R10 000 if found guilty.
Apart from penalties and fines, repeat offenders could face possible jail time at the discretion of the court.
“We also advise the public to assist law enforcement officers in reporting any illegal dumping activities.”
Residents can report illegal dumping on 0860 543 000.
