Three suspects arrested by EMPD during operation

The arrests took place during the law enforcement operation along Andrew Mapheto Drive near Endulweni Fire Station.

Officers from the EMPD’s Thembisa Precinct arrested three suspects on May 3.

Two of those arrested were taken into custody under the Immigration Act and suspected of being undocumented.

The third suspect was arrested for bribery.

The arrests took place during the law enforcement operation along Andrew Mapheto Drive near Endulweni Fire Station.

Officers stopped a silver Toyota light delivery vehicle (LDV) with three male occupants.

The driver’s licence was requested and he produced it.

Officers continued with their duties and asked the two passengers for their valid identification documents.

The pair failed to produce such documents and officers explained to them that they could be jailed. The driver claimed that the two did have valid passports that were at their place of residence.

The driver was asked to fetch the official documents and produce them at the Thembisa South Police Station.

It is believed that when the driver returned to the station, he produced R600 in cash and asked the officers to look the other way by freeing the duo.

EMPD spokesperson Marie Mashishi said the driver was apprehended for trying to bribe the officers.

“The driver was immediately handcuffed and charged with bribery. The lawbreakers are expected to appear at the Thembisa Magistrate’s Court soon.

“The immigration office was notified and the seized R600 cash was booked under the SAP13. Their confiscated Toyota LDV was taken to the EMPD Thembisa Precinct for safekeeping.”
