Kempton Park police catch suspected hijackers
“The suspects were arrested and detained for those charges and hopefully will be linked to previous cases related to robberies related to Ubers,” said Ditshego.
On November 17, Kempton Park SAPS crime prevention officers Sergeant Archie Leshaba, Sergeant Caiphus Mphahlele, Sergeant Karabo Tlometsane and Constable Thabang Makota were conducting a stop-and-search operation on Kerk Street, Kempton Park, when they were alerted to an attempted hijacking.
According to Kempton Park SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Dipuo Ditshego, an Uber driver approached the officers, reporting that two passengers had attempted to hijack his vehicle at gunpoint.
Acting swiftly on the description provided, the officers apprehended the suspects.

They were found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and live ammunition.
The pair now face charges of attempted robbery with a firearm, attempted hijacking, possession of an unlicensed firearm, and possession of live ammunition.
“The suspects were arrested and detained. We hope to be able to link them to other Uber-related robbery cases,” said Ditshego.
The suspects are expected to appear in the Kempton Park Magistrate’s Court soon.
Ditshego commended the crime prevention team for their quick response, hard work and dedication to ensuring the community’s safety.
