Elderly man killed in R21 crash, teen driver under investigation
Police are investigating whether the teen driver of the second vehicle may have been under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.
A fatal crash involving two vehicles occurred on the R21 highway, before the Pomona offramp, yesterday, March 9.
It is believed that an elderly couple, travelling in a silver Ford Fiesta after attending church, was involved in a rear-end collision.
The 78-year-old male driver succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead at the scene by paramedics.
His wife sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Roseacres Hospital, where she remains in critical condition.

“The second vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz ML driven by an 18-year-old male, was also involved in the crash,” said EMPD spokesperson Thabiso Makgato.
She added that authorities believe he may have been under the influence of alcohol, as a bottle of vodka was found in his vehicle.

“He also did not possess a valid driver’s licence or any form of identification,” said Makgato.
He was transported to Thembisa Secondary Hospital for medical treatment.
Traffic Gauteng, along with other relevant authorities, managed the scene.
Makgato confirmed that a case of culpable homicide has been opened, and investigations are underway.
