Crackdown at OR Tambo: Unlicensed e-hailing vehicles towed

Dozens of e-hailing vehicles were seized during the operation. Drivers were found to be operating without permits or proper documentation.

A total of 33 e-hailing vehicles were impounded on May 14 near OR Tambo International Airport during a joint law enforcement operation targeting non-compliant public transport.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Police Department (EMPD) Taxi Task Team, in collaboration with the Gauteng Traffic Police, conducted a blitz at 08:54 as part of a broader crackdown to enforce public transport regulations and uphold the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996.

The inspections focused on e-hailing vehicles operating for reward in the Kempton Park area.

Officers discovered that numerous vehicles were operating without the necessary permits required to legally transport passengers.

“All non-compliant vehicles were impounded and transported to the Benoni Provincial Pound,” the EMPD confirmed.

Authorities are now urging e-hailing drivers and vehicle owners to ensure their cars are fully roadworthy and carry valid documentation before operating within the City of Ekurhuleni.

“Operators must adhere to all public transport regulations to avoid enforcement action,” EMPD warned.

This operation forms part of an ongoing effort to clamp down on illegal and unregulated public transport operating within the city’s jurisdiction, especially around high-traffic zones like OR Tambo International Airport.
