Gauteng safer: Police crack down on crime, arrest 79 suspects
SAPS Rapid Response Services, including K9 and Highway Patrol, conducted a week-long operation across Gauteng, resulting in 79 arrests for serious crimes like carjacking and murder, alongside the recovery of 41 stolen vehicles and nine illegal firearms.
Units forming part of the SAPS Rapid Response Services (RRS), including the flying squad, K9 Units and Highway Patrol, arrested 79 people and recovered 41 motor vehicles and nine firearms across Gauteng from May 30 to June 5.
Members participated in concentrated operations, vehicle checkpoints, secure escorts, and intensive patrols across Gauteng, resulting in 35 arrests for serious crimes, including common assault and GBH, possession of suspected stolen property, conspiracy to commit murder, unauthorised wearing of a uniform, kidnapping, malicious damage to property, motor vehicle theft, shoplifting, illegal immigration, murder, armed robbery, housebreaking, carjacking, house robbery, contravention of protection orders, and theft.
Officers recovered 41 hijacked and stolen motor vehicles, with eight arrests related to their possession. They also seized nine unlicensed firearms, leading to 11 arrests.

In addition, 25 arrests were made for possession of and dealing in drugs. Heroin, dagga, cocaine, Mandrax, and crystal methamphetamine were confiscated in separate incidents.
Investigations into these cases are ongoing.
Those arrested will appear in local Magistrates’ Courts across Gauteng.
