Search underway after NEWBORN is abducted from clinic

A woman wearing black clothing allegedly took the three-day-old infant after offering to hold the child while the mother used the restroom.

A three-day-old baby was allegedly abducted from the Margaret Zuma Clinic in Winnie Mandela, Thembisa, during a routine check-up on June 23.

According to Sergeant Patricia Mgigima of the Thembisa SAPS, the 31-year-old mother had taken her newborn for a check-up on the day of the incident.

At around 13:00, she used the toilet and found other women in a queue.

While waiting, an unknown woman offered to hold her baby so she could relieve herself.

“According to the distraught mother, when she came out of the toilet, the unknown woman had disappeared with her baby,” said Mgigima.

The matter was reported to the Thembisa Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.

A case of child abduction has been opened and investigations are ongoing.

Police urge anyone who may have seen the woman, described as wearing black clothing or who may be able to identify her, to come forward.
